Little rascals
Morning harvests

Have you ever tried to catch a poem?
They are slippery little rascals.
 
I sit at my desk and command
with ivory tongue 
and silver tones, 
¨Come now, it is time to write!¨
 
I watch a parade of words slip under the rug,
all snickers, 
all giggles.
 
What a raucous bunch they are.
 
I sweat and push,
pen to paper,
objective in mind.
 
Black ink splutters,
synonyms expire.
Words chortle
pointing their vowely fingers in mockery and delight
as consonants dance
      away 
from 
      me.
 
Just out of reach.
 
I take a walk through the garden:
A sortie of quails shuffles by.
Blackberries bob in the autumn breeze.
I hear a dog bark from afar.
 
Words tumble into my lap,
on the wings of a robin’s flight.
 
You can never prepare for these things.
